Deliberations at Wednesday’s meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, otherwise known as FEC, are likely to centre on the appraisal of how well four ministers have delivered on their mandates.
The exercise, which commenced late last year with presentations from two ministers – Stella Oduah of the Ministry of Aviation, and her counterpart in the Ministry of Communications, Omobola Johnson – had to be halted following the helicopter crash in Bayelsa state in which the Governor of Kaduna State, Patrick Yakowa, the former National Security Adviser, Owoeye Azazi and five others died.
Preparations towards the proposed Nigeria centenary celebrations, to mark the colonial master’s amalgamation of Northern and Southern protectorates in 1914, will also be discussed at the meeting.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the performance appraisal would continue today with the FEC receiving briefings from the Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Edem Duke; Minister of State for Defence, Olusola Obada; Minister of Environment, Hadiza Malaifa, and Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufai, on the performances, processes and challenges of their ministries as well as departments and agencies under their supervision during the past year.
In addition, Mrs. Rufai is expected to present a memo seeking FEC’s ratification of the president’s anticipatory approval for the establishment of three new federal universities in Kebbi, Yobe and Zamfara states.
Other items billed for discussion at the meeting include a memo by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, requesting approval for Nigeria to subscribe to additional shares and capital increase in the World Bank under the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, IBRD, voice reform.
President Goodluck Jonathan is also expected to present a memo seeking approval of the recommendation by the Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE, that Messrs Brunnel Engineering Inc. Limited is competent to carry out the construction of the Code of Conduct Bureau headquarters office complex, Abuja.
The Deputy Chairman and Minister of National Planning, Shamsudeen Usman, is also expected to present the template for ministerial performance review reporting during the meeting scheduled to hold at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
