Repairs on Lagos/Ibadan expressway to end this month

The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos State, Oluwatoyin Obikoya, says work on section one of the Lagos/Ibadan expressway will be completed this month.

The emergency repair of section one of the highway-- which spans Lagos to Shagamu Interchange-- was awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.
Section two of the project-- which begins from the Shagamu Interchange to Ibadan --was awarded to RCC, following the termination of the concession agreement between the Federal Government and Bi-Courtney Consortium.
However, the two contractors closed for Christmas on Dec. 20, 2012 and Dec. 21, 2012 respectively, with work on section one half completed, and 90 per cent already done on section 2.
Speaking on Wednesday in Lagos, Obikoya who is the Engineer Representative on section one, noted that Julius Berger resumed work on site on Jan. 7.
"Right now, the contractor is milling some corrugated sections of the road, laying asphalt and upgrading the road shoulders.
"By the end of this month, all failed sections would have been repaired. The emergency repair works would be completed before the end of the month," he said.
He explained that the nature of the failure on the section was such that made the road wavy and there was need to remove and replace the asphalt.
He, however, said that the asphalt removed was usually recycled and used to fill the road shoulders on portions where there were traffic diversions. He further said that the contract for the re-construction of the highway had not been awarded.
Also, the Engineer Representative on Section two being handled by RCC, Mr Joseph Adesina said that work would be completed on the section next week.
Adesina said that the work was currently being concluded with patching of some sections and clearing and fixing of drainage around Ojo area of Ibadan.
"They (contractors) resumed work on Jan. 5 and by the end of next week, they would finish the work," he said.
He said that the 10 per cent of work left was negligible and would not take time to finish.
He, however, said that he was compiling data and costing for the award of the re-construction of the section to the Ministry of Works.
