A colourful ceremony was held to herald the events marking Nigeria’s centenary celebration today (Monday) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The roll call at the event include the president and his wife, former heads of state, Generals Yakubu Gowon, Mohammadu Buhari, Abdulsalami Abukakar and former president Olusegun Obasanjo among others.
The ceremonies according to the organizers will be private sector driven and the federal government may not spend state funds.
National Assembly Supports FG
The National Assembly leadership have also thrown their support behind the emblem unveiling.
While the speaker, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal said that 100 years of Nigeria will foster unity, Senate President David Mark believes that Nigeria’s centenary event should help to galvanize national transformation.
PRONACO To Lead Protest
Meanwhile, the Pro National Conference Organization (PRONACO), says it will mobilise civil society groups nationwide against the federal government’s centenary celebration plans, if it’s not urgently reviewed and replaced with a process of popular renewal of the Nigerian union.
Pronaco spokesperson, Mr. Olawale Okunniyi, described the federal government’s celebration programme as lacking depth and substance.
He warned every credible member of civil society platform in the country to steer clear off the celebration in their interest.
