A soldier with the Special Task Force on Jos crisis, STF, on Saturday shot dead a passenger travelling in a commercial taxi and wounded the car’s driver in the Plateau state capital.
The incident occurred along the busy Yakubu Gown way, near NASCO group of company.
Confirming the incident at a news conference at the STF headquarters on Sunday, spokesman for force Salisu Mustapha, a Captain, said the personnel who committed that act was undergoing interrogations at the command.
“The Soldier is under custody undergoing investigations” Mr. Mustapha said.
Mr. Mustapha said soildier reacted after the driver, Salisu Musa, shunt the proper way, driving against the traffic, arousing suspicion he may have been conveying offensive materials.
The unnamed soldier opened dire at the car, hitting the driver and a passenger of the car, Wagley Dauda, who was staff of the University of Jos security department.
“The driver’s action was suspicious. Consequently, the soldier cocked and released a shot which pierced through the left shoulder of the driver and unfortunately hit Mr. Wagley Dauda on his chest,” the spokesperson said.
“The victims were immediately evacuated to Jos University Teaching Hospital JUTH for treatment by personnel of the STF however, Mr. Wagley died in the theater while receiving medical attentions.”
Mr. Mustapha said the said driver was in a stable condition, but would be charged accordingly for the offense he committed.
The Information office of the University of Jos, said Mr. Wagley was on his way to the University to relieve a colleague on duty, before meeting his death.
