Measles Kills 17 in Niger

Niger State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Ibrahim Sule, said yesterday that the death toll following
the outbreak of measles in the state has increased from nine to 17 within the past two months.
The commissioner made the disclosure while briefing newsmen in Minna, saying a total of 619 cases of the disease were reported. He said the outbreak of the disease was first recorded on the January 1st this year in Edati Local Government Area of the state.
He said afterwards, the disease spread to 14 local government areas of Bosso, Borgu, Chanchanga, Lapai, Mariga, Mokwa, Agwara, Gbako, Lavun, Munya, Shiroro, Rijau, Paikoro and Suleja.
Dr. Sule said based on the report earlier received, his ministry embarked on sensitization campaign at the local government level, while measles vaccines were distributed for immunization.
He stated that measles is an infection caused by a virus and could affect all age groups. Sule added that the disease could be prevented through immunization which he said is free in all government hospitals.
