Ahead of the maiden African Youth Athletics Championship in Warri,the Nigerian contingent to the competition,have expressed their confidence of winning the event on homesoil.
Warri will on March 27-31 host the Athletics competition,meant for African athletes under the age of 17,with Nigeria registering the highest number of athletes,of 59.
President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria,Solomon Ogba,said that they are not only looking at staging a memorable event,but they are equally looking at winning it as hosts.
“We are not only going to give Africa an event they will be talking about for a long,long time and which will serve as the benchmark for future championships,we are also hosting to win.
“We have a good team that we believe will not only win the African Youth Championships in Athletics but also one that can produce many future stars for Nigeria’’ Ogba said.
“Last year we won the senior African Championships in Athletics in Port Novo,Republic of Benin and I believe our policy of exposing our young athletes to international competition and good training has started yielding the desired results,’’ Ogba added.
