FAAN begins automation of revenue points at airports

In a bid to boost and ensure transparency in its revenue drive, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will soon begin implementation of the automation of revenue points at all its airports.

FAAN’s General Manager, Corporate Communications, Yakubu Dati told reporters at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos yesterday that the automation of aviation fuel supply to aircraft by marketers has been completed, while all 11 fuel marketers have been fully integrated into the information platform.

The access toll gate of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja, he said, has been completed, while the automated gate is currently undergoing a test-run, preparatory to full operation on May 1. Vehicles passing through the toll gate at NAIA, he said, will be identified electronically after scanning the provided stickers on such vehicles, as part of efforts to enhance security, transparency, tracking vehicular traffic and ensuring security of persons and airport environment at any point in time, besides.

He added in order to ensure smooth implementation of the project, three modes of payment for passage through the access gates will be introduced.

He listed the modes to include; through cash payment of the appropriate fee, through ‘E’ payment, i.e. the machine reads the tag on the windscreen and opens electronically and payment through a smart card.

Meanwhile, barely 24 hours after it gave a deadline to international airlines operating in the country to comply with its revenue automation requirements or face sanction, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), on Thursday directed domestic airline operators to also begin full automation to ensure seamless data capture for appropriate billing in the authority’s revenue collection.

The Acting Director General of NCAA, Mr Joyce  Nkemakolam, gave this directive at a counterpart meeting in Lagos yesterday, after a similar one with the foreign airlines on the collection of Ticket Sales Charge (TSC) and Cargo Sales Charge (CSC) at the Aviation House, Murtala Muhammed Airport(MMA),Lagos

The warning became necessary following the disclosure by the firm handling the automation; Aviation Technology (AVITECH) that three airlines are still at zero automation level, while some are operating semi automation.

The DG has equally issued a two week ultimatum to those who have not connected at all and the ones in semi automation to endeavour to entrench a full direct integration with the NCAA portal.

He said NCAA is ready to work harmoniously with all the operating airlines as, “we cannot continue like this, we are equally accountable to the supervising Federal Ministry of Aviation and the National Assembly. Let us work together and do the right thing.”

The Acting DG also warned charter operators to desist from non compliance which emanates from non disclosure of the nature and purpose of flights.

This practice, he said denies the authority the much needed revenue and NCAA will come down hard on any one engaging in it.

He also directed charter operators to fully automate their operating system in consonance with the NCAA portal.
