Barry Steenkamp says the Paralympian will have to "live with his conscience" if his account that he shot girlfriend Reeva dead accidentally is false. The father of Oscar Pistorius’s tragic girlfriend says he may be able to forgive the athlete – if he is not lying about how he killed her.

Barry Steenkamp said the Paralympian will “suffer alone” if his account that he shot 29-year-old Reeva accidentally is false.

The 26-year-old gold medallist was released on bail yesterday , despite a magistrate revealing he had “difficulty” with his story.

Pistorius is charged with the premeditated murder of girlfriend Reeva after she was shot dead at his home on Valentine’s Day.

He claims he mistook the model for an intruder when he blasted her through a locked toilet door at the exclusive gated property in Pretoria.

Grieving father Barry told a South African newspaper that Pistorius will have to “live with his conscience” if he has lied about what happened.

He told the Afrikaans-language Beeld newspaper: “There are only two people who really know what happened, Oscar Pistorius and the Lord.

“It does not matter how much money he has or how good his legal team are, he must live with his conscience if he lets his lawyers tell lies on his behalf.

“But if he is telling the truth, I can him perhaps someday forgive. When it does not happen as he tells it, he must suffer. And he will suffer - only he knowsMr Steenkamp spoke as the Olympic and Paralympic star was allowed to walk free from court after a four-day bail hearing which has gripped the world.

But the global superstar was given tough bail conditions by the magistrate while he waits to stand trial within the next year - including a ban on booze.

The court warned Pistorius he would also not be able to visit any airport departure halls or leave Pretoria and must report to a police station twice a week.

He will have to surrender all his passports, firearms, see a probation officer and cough up a £73,000 bond, of which he had to pay £7,000 immediately.
