As a way of rectifying the loss of employment suffered by commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Okada following the ban placed on them from many major routes in Lagos, the state government has
commenced re-certifying them this week with the hope of employing them into the state civil service.
The state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Kayode Opeifa, made the disclosure in Ikorodu, during the public enlightenment programme organised for the commercial motorists and operators.
He was speaking at an event attended by former deputy governor, Rafiu Ogunleye; majority leader, state House of Assembly, Honourable Sanai Agunbiade, political and community leaders and stakeholders, among others.
According to the commissioner, the law restricting okada operators from plying certain routes in the state was not meant to punish anybody, but for the good of the state and its people, adding that the re-certification would ensure that those affected were employed by the state government, as he government was desirous to create job for the okada operators.
He also said that there was no going back on the law, adding that the enlightenment was to engage stakeholders and see what could be done to improve or renew the law if the need be.
He urged the affected people in Ikorodu to go to the Works Yard in the town to get recertified for job placement.
