Manchester United defender,Rio Ferdinand, has been recalled to the English national team squad, for
the first time since 2011.
Ferdinand who has been constantly overlooked by manager Roy Hodgson, was called up for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro, after injuries ruled out several other England defenders.
The 34-year old player has not been invited to the Three Lions, since the racist incident between his younger brother,Anton Ferdinand and former England captain John Terry.
Hodgson claimed that he left out Ferdinand, because of “footballing reasons,”but it is understood that the decision was made to accommodate either Ferdinand or Terry,in order not to have clashes in the team.
“It’s a no brainer. We need a good centre-half. It’s not really much more complicated than that,” said Hodgson.
“There’s no sinister connection with his lack of selection in the past.”
“He’s playing well, his team are doing extremely well and this is the moment to select him because he deserves it on current form.”
“Hopefully he can help us win the next two matches because that’s the most important thing.”
Ferdinand has won 81 caps, since making his international debut in 1997, against Cameroon.
