In view of the rising trend of contempt of legislative powers by public officers, the House of Representatives plans to enact a law against defaulters.
A member representing Umuahia North/South and Ikwuano Federal constituency, Hon Udo Oluchi Ibeji, who spoke with LEADERSHIP SUNDAY, stated that contempt of the legislature is the highest threat to the nation’s democracy according to him, the National Assembly represents the people of Nigeria hence anybody violating its orders disrespects the entire nation.
Ibeji said, “Contempt for the National Assembly either by the executive or anybody is a threat to democracy. The National Assembly represents the people of Nigeria where there are 360 members of House of Representatives and 109 Senators representing every nook and cranny of the country.
“If a committee in the House issues a summon and it is not obeyed, that is a very grievous thing. It cannot happen in any civilised world, and it has to stop. In fact, we are trying to make a law for committal proceedings to be exercised over such a person.
