National Hospital Workers Begin Strike

Written By Gragrah on Wednesday, March 06, 2013 | 3/06/2013 06:35:00 am

Workers at National Hospital, Abuja yesterday began a three day strike to protest the hospital’s
poor conditions of service and disregard of staff welfare for the past 14 years.
Nurses, midwives, senior staff and other medical workers, apart from doctors, will report at the hospital but will not stay at their duty posts between 8am and noon, according to the three-day work-to-rule declared by their unions. The three-day action is to back at least 11 demands by three unions at the National Hospital—Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, and Senior Staff Association.
The staff was demanding that the condition-of-service agreement reached in 2010 be implemented. They also demanded that the hospital’s administration director be sent into retirement after working for 35 years. “For 14 years, we have worked without a direction. We don’t know where we are going,” said Rasaki Tajudeen, head of NHA’s Medical and Health Workers Union.
