Speaking in commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day, Funlola lamented that violence had killed and disabled as many women between the ages of 15 and 44 as cancer, and that its toll on women’s health surpassed that of traffic accidents and malaria combined.
Survivors of sexual assault are three times more likely to suffer from depression, six times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol, 26 times more likely to abuse drugs, and four times more likely to contemplate suicide. Worse also, over 100 million girls and women worldwide are living with the consequences of female genital mutilation-FGM”, Funlola Buraimoh stressed.
