Nigerian, Englama, named head of West Africa Monetary Institute


Mr. Englama will head WAMI for an initial two years.
The West African Monetary Institute, WAMI, has announced the appointment of Abwaku Englama as its Director General.

The appointment, which was ratified by the Committee of Governors of the Central Banks of the West African Monetary Zone, WAMZ, during its meeting in Abuja on Friday, takes effect fromFebruary 1 for an initial period of two years, subject to renewal.
The Accra, Ghana-based sub-regional organization was set up in 2001 with the primary mandate to undertake activities towards the creation of a single currency and formation of West African Central Bank.
Mr. Englama, a Nigerian, studied Economics at the University of Maiduguri, where he graduated in 1981. He earned his Doctorate Degree in 1990 from the University of Essex, United Kingdom.
He subsequently taught Economics at the University of Maiduguri until 1993 when he joined the Central Bank of Nigeria.
During his career, the new WAMZ director general, coordinated several collaborative research activities within the apex bank, working with development partners and multi-lateral agencies.
According to the Central Bank Director of Corporate Communications, Ugochukwu Okoroafor, Mr. Englama has also served as a member of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute for Social and Economic Research, NISER, Ibadan. He is married with children
