President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday, said that despite the huge amount of money expended
by the Federal Government in the provision of water and sanitation, Nigeria still needed over N350 billion ($1.91 billion dollars) annually to meet the nation’s water and sanitation targets.
Speaking at the Presidential summit on “Innovative Funding of the Water Sector” at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Jonathan said despite the investments by the federal government, the situation in rural and sub-urban areas as regards access to clean water remained unacceptable.
He said on the average, only one in five rural households had clean water at home, while most families collected water from unsafe sources, such as rainfalls, ponds, streams and rivers.
