The management of King’s College, Lagos, on Thursday, gave out free copies of Things Fall
Apart, authored by late Prof. Chinua Achebe, to 1,000 SS1 and SS2 pupils of the school.
The Principal, Mr. Dele Olapeju, gave out the copies during the college’s Cultural Day celebration held on Thursday.
According to him, the gesture is aimed at celebrating the deceased author and to inspire pupils to read.
He added it was also to mark the school’s cultural day and to celebrate the literary ingenuity of the cerebral writer.
He said, “Reading his books is like a journey into Africa. And for children who have not been to the Eastern part of the country, they can be there just by reading his books. The language is simple and digestable.”
Also, the King’s College, Lagos, Parent Teacher Association has said that it is planning to reward the teachers during this year’s Teachers’ Day in September.
The Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Oriakhi, said this during the Annual General Meeting of the association held on Saturday.
While he appreciated the role of the teachers, the chairman explained that it was also responsible for payment of salaries of PTA 32 teachers, 28 non-teaching staff, 10 civil defence personnel and three other security staff.
He said, “We are working out details for a grand PTA awards for our teachers as we promised since last year. By God’s grace, it will be done during Teachers’ Day in September this year.”
Oriakhi said the issue of water scarcity on both campuses had been addressed, stressing that water supply had increased significantly, with the provision of 30KVA generator, tanks, treated the industrial borehole and did general water reticulation.
According to him, the broken taps had been replaced, and there is safe drinking water for the pupils.
He added that additional 19 toilets had been constructed to complement the 10 built by the school authorities.
“One hundred fans had been provided in Abuja hostels and more areas that need have been identified by the welfare committee,” he said.
In the areas of building up moral and discipline among the pupils, he said the publicity and awards committee, headed by Olori Abimbola Olumegbon, embarked on a project to assist in shaping the pupils manners and behaviour.
This, he stated, were being done through the organisation of seminars on peer pressure and etiquette at both campuses of the school.
