Nigerians Oppose Immunity For Reps

Prominent Nigerians, political parties and professional bodies have asked members of the House of
Representatives to forget their clamour for immunity and concentrate on the business of law making.

Leaders of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) said the lawmakers’ quest was superfluous. The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) declared the action shameful and selfish.
The chairman of the Kaduna State chapter of NBA, Barr. Samuel Atung, said, “It is rather very shameful and this is a classic example of how not to legislate for selfish reasons.” The ACF, through its national publicity secretary Mr. Anthony Sani, said: “Immunity for legislators for what they say in the hallowed chambers has existed, albeit unwritten.
I think such Act for immunity is superfluous. “I still believe there are too many laws already and that laws have both letters and spirit which should go together in application of justice. I do not believe our problems border on soundness of our laws but on unwillingness to live within the laws.”
The state chairman of the ACN ,Barr. Muhammed Musa Soba, said: “At a time when the concept of immunity has been grossly and serially abused by its beneficiaries, the House of Representatives’ demand for immunity is ill-conceived and a clear testimony that our law-making mechanism is in a state of confusion and too self-centred to be able to discharge its constitutional responsibilities. The demand for immunity is a shame and condemnable.”
