Lagos State Safety Commission has commenced the installation of safety signs at strategic locations in government’s ministries, departments and agencies.
The commission said on Wednesday that the development was born out of the government’s desires to avert avoidable disasters.
Head of Service, Adesegun Ogunlewe, inaugurated the project at the Public Service Office, Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.
Ogunlewe appealed to public servants to be safety conscious and observe those signs.
He said, “When you travel abroad, you see these safety signs right from the airport, but here in Nigeria, we don’t see them. We need to be conscious of these signs. I appeal to staff, especially the safety champions to educate other staff on what these signs mean.
“We are spending a lot of money to install these signs; so there is need for us to call the attention of our visitors to them.”
Director-General, LSC, Mrs. Dominga Odebunmi, stated that safety signs would be installed in every part of the government secretariat in order to ensure safety and prevent disasters.
“There is the need for civil servants to abide by these signs. All MDAs are expected to have safety champions to pilot safety activities in their domains and ensure that anything that will jeopardise safety is removed,” Odebunmi said.
Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Wale Ahmed, said there was the need to embrace certain measures aimed at preventing disasters at homes, industries, among others.
He explained that the state government decided to set up the State Safety Commission to address the issue of safety, especially through advocacy and enforcement when the need arose, as government would not allow the citizens to be exposed to avoidable danger.
Ahmed noted that the safety signs, being installed at various ministries within the government secretariat, would go a long way in ensuring safety.
